Spanish state prosecutor accuses Jose Mourinho of tax fraud

A host of football stars have run into trouble in Spain over suspected tax fraud related to image rights, with Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo summoned to appear in court on July 31 to answer four counts of tax evasion of 14.7 million euros.

The cases are about the profits made from image rights, not salaries from their clubs. Mourinho has not yet commented on the allegations.

Manchester United are believed to be on the lookout for attacking reinforcements this summer as Jose Mourinho prepares his team for a return to the Champions League next season. This is similar to deals struck with the Spanish taxman by fellow Argentinians Javier Mascherano and Lionel Messi a year ago.

The summoning of Ronaldo coincided with the same Madrid-based prosecutor's office accusing Mourinho of two counts of tax fraud.

Mourinho was manager of Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013 before he returned to the Premier League for his second spell in charge of Chelsea.

Barcelona's Lionel Messi was sentenced to a 21-month jail sentence and €2.09 million fine previous year for tax fraud.

Spain's counsel, Mourinho gave tax evasion (2011 and 2012) tax in two stages while being coach of Real Madrid (2011 and 2012).

Atletico Madrid striker Radamel Falcao and Real Madrid defender Fabio Coentrao, who have also been accused of tax fraud in Spain, are also clients of Mendes.

"From now on it will be the judge in charge of the case who will take the necessary steps to determine the possible responsibilities of Mr Mourinho".

A prosecutor said Mr Mourinho, 54, did not declare income from image rights in order to get an "illicit benefit". The Portuguese global is set to give evidence in his case on 31 July.

The prison term will be suspended as is common in Spain for first offences for non-violent crimes carrying a sentence of less than two years.

Meanwhile Brazil star and Barcelona forward Neymar and his parents are due to stand trial for alleged corruption over his transfer from Santos in 2013.
