South Korea's Moon issues strongest comments to date on 'comfort women' deal

A total of 340,000 United Nations troops from 16 countries fought to defend South Korea during the three-year war, 300,000 of them from the U.S. And their sacrifice is personal for President Moon, whose parents fled North Korea during the war.

In early June, South Korea terminated the ongoing deployment of additional elements of the United States missile defense system THAAD over an investigation into the arrival of four U.S. rocket launchers exposing cover-ups at the Defense Ministry in Seoul in order to evade an environmental impact assessment.

Components of the THAAD missile defense system being brought in to the deployment site in Seongju, North Gyeongsang Province.

Thousands of protesters marched near the USA embassy in Seoul on Saturday, accusing President Donald Trump of "forcing" South Korea to deploy a controversial American missile defence system opposed by China.

When asked about frustration in Washington that Moon's administration has not fully deployed a USA anti-missile system and insisted on an environmental impact assessment first, the president said that getting the assessment done "does not mean that we will postpone or reverse the decision to deploy".

President Moon also mentioned his upcoming trip to Washington next week to meet with President Trump where the two leaders will reinforce the Seoul-Washington alliance and look for ways to resolve the North Korea nuclear issue.

Tensions around the Korean Peninsula have recently escalated as Pyongyang has carried out a number of ballistic missile and nuclear tests in violation of the UN Security Council's resolutions.

Moon's remarks revealed for the first time details of the so-called original THAAD agreement, while apparently shedding more light on his new administration's earlier decision to temporarily suspend the deployment of the USA missile shield.

"For some reason that I do not know, this entire THAAD process was accelerated", said Moon. And you want to do that.

With regard to the deployment of the U.S. THAAD missile defense system, the resolution noted Seoul's explanation that it has no intention to reverse deployment commitments as it "implements the domestic procedures to uphold democratic, legal, and procedural legitimacy and transparency".

"The president must have been very offended when given the question".

The US interviewer also said, "President Moon believes he is going to get the green light from President Trump to have these bilateral talks with North Korea, to begin this inter-Korean dialogue".

"China provides the most economic assistance to North Korea".
