Google will stop reading your e- mail

The company has confirmed in a post on its official blog that it's no longer going to scan the email contents of Gmail users for the objective of selling targeted advertising to you. Google announced the new changes in a blogspot stating that its consumer version of Gmail will benefit from the same settings used in its enterprise version which is part of G Suite.

For the unintended, the G Suite is company's solution for enterprises, which offers a host of services including Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Google Drive etc.

Gmail messages will no longer be scanned for keywords to enable Google to provide personalized ads. Google will still serve ads in the free version of Gmail as promoted messages, but they will be targeted based on search history and YouTube views instead of email content. In the blog post, Google also called out its anti-spam, anti-phishing, and Smart Reply features for Gmail, all of which require the company to analyze email content.

Google will stop reading your emails with the goal of delivering target ads. It is understandable, with the enterprise version of Gmail, the can not just scan emails to create targeted ads, otherwise, those companies will not come on board in the first place. By ending all scanning, Google hopes to end the confusion and sell Gmail to even more businesses. Google says that it wanted to "more closely align" its business and consumer product reports The Guardian.

The email scanning practice had been considered controversial because it was intrusive and infringes on privacy. The information gleaned from scanning those emails was used to personalize ads.
