Federer demolishes Zverev to win ninth Halle title

Federer waltzed to a 6-1, 6-3 victory in just 53 minutes.

20-year-old Zverev, who had defeated Federer in last year's semi-final, was no match for the Swiss.

Federer's 92nd title moves him to within two of Ivan Lendl for second on the Open Era titles list. "I'm still just very happy how I was able to close it out in the tiebreaker", said Federer, who first reached the Halle final in 2003, when his opponent on Sunday was just 6".

The big-serving 35-year-old, ranked 32nd in the world, had lost on a tiebreak in his only previous final appearance in 2014, blowing a match point on the way, and he said: "I can not believe I have finally won this tournament".

Fourth seed Zverev has already won three titles this year and stayed in the hunt for another by coming from behind to defeat Richard Gasquet 4-6 6-4 6-3. So credits to him, he played an unbelievable match.

"I'll take a couple of days off and then start practising there again, see how conditions are over there, wait for the draw to come out, see what day I'm playing and then take it day by day, really", he added.

A win here would perfectly cap off Federer's pre-Wimbledon preparations.

But, instead of serving out the set, the top seed was broken again and Khachanov even held two set points at 6-5 before the world No. 5 recovered and forced a tie-break. "I'll prepare myself the best I can, but he's definitely the favourite in that match".

The 35-year-old broke in the opening game of the match to establish his control and did not offer a reprieve as he dominated from start to finish. It was his ninth title at Halle, and the shortest of his 11 finals.

"I thought it was extremely close, especially that second set", Federer, who has never won a tournament nine times, told reporters.

Lopez, whose last tournament win was at Gstaad a year ago, has never got past the quarter-finals at Wimbledon. At 35, the Swiss player became the oldest victor of the grass-court tournament.
