Disney to Change Auction Scene in 'Pirates of the Caribbean' Attraction

In a rendering posted to the blog, a sign that now reads "Auction: Take a wench for a bride" will read "Auction: Surrender yer loot".

Disney officials said on Thursday that the Paris park's ride would be the first to undergo the change, with the new version set to be in place when the ride re-opens on July 24. The previous change involved pirate men chasing women, which was altered to them now chasing women to get food they have on trays.

It's a weird and shocking thing to see in a Disney theme park in the year 2017, especially since this ride has inspired an entire series of blockbuster movies. All Disney fans know the phrase "We wants the redhead!" as it is yelled out by a band of pirates looking to win her at the auction.

In the auction scene, the Redhead will become a pirate, helping the Auctioneer gather valuables from the townspeople to auction off to the pirates. "If the Pirates of the Caribbean ride normalizes sexual slavery with humor, it can desensitize viewers to this heinous and very real gendered crime".

Back in 2006, the park added in characters from Pirates of the Carribean film franchise, including Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow and Geoffrey Rush's Captain Barbossa. Walt Disney World's version of the ride will also be subject to the same modifications.

Imagineering Ambassador and Disney Legend Marty Sklar, who retired as Head of Imagineering in 2009 and worked closely with Walt Disney, said changes like this are a part of Walt's vision for the park.

The auction scene originally featured a female character known as the Redhead being offered to lusty pirates under the hammer, but she will no longer be for sale after the changes have been introduced.

Some will say messing with Walt Disney's original design is sacrilegious, but Disney has always changed with the times. "Change is a "tradition" at Disneyland that today's Imagineers practice", he explained to the Orange County Register this week.

While there are no photos of the new auction, a Disney Parks artist rendering shows the red-headed woman in her new role.
