Inland congressmen divided on bills targeting undocumented immigrants

The sentencing legislation is named after Kate Steinle, who was fatally shot in 2015 in San Francisco by a man who had had seven previous felony convictions and was deported to Mexico on five previous occasions. It seeks to increase the maximum penalties for migrants who re-enter the United States illegally after deportation. Together these bills ensure that taxpayers dollars are not being used to subsidize "sanctuary cities", and increase prison sentences for immigrants convicted of illegally re-entering the USA following deportation.
"[Congressman Bob Goodlatte] has worked with law enforcement to write a series of critical immigration bills that will close the risky loopholes exploited by criminals, gang members, drug dealers, killers, terrorists", Trump stated.
Both the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), United We Dream and the Los Angeles Latino Movement USA have stated that both laws not only represent constitutional violations but that their true intention would be to "authorize the force of deportations and the anti-immigrant agenda of President Trump ".
"Sanctuary jurisdictions pose a threat to the American public by refusing to work with ICE and allowing egregious criminal offenders back into the community to put the lives of the public at risk", Homan said during the briefing.
One of the bills would bar cities and localities who don't fully comply with federal demands to turn over undocumented immigrants who they've detained from receiving federal grants to prevent terrorism and support law enforcement.
"Now that the House has acted, I urged the Senate to take up these bills, pass them, and send them to my desk".
"I knew Kate Steinle growing up and remain in touch with her family, who live in my congressional district", the Dublin Democrat said.

The pair of bills face a steeper road in the Senate, where Republicans have a slim 52-48 majority. It is a bait-and-switch strategy: "Use a terrible tragedy to sell a policy that would not have prevented that death, so that you put more immigrants in jail for longer periods of time".
AILA Executive Director Benjamin Jonhnson said the No Sanctuary for Criminals Act would make it "more hard for many localities, including large cities, to arrest and prosecute potentially unsafe criminals which surely can not be the intent of anyone involved in drafting this legislation".
