Le Pen charged in probe into misused European Union funds

Le Pen has denied any wrongdoing and denied the allegations which she called political "persecution" against her.

French far-right leader Marine Le Pen has been placed under formal investigation over an alleged European parliament funding scandal.

The Parliament believes it may have been defrauded to the tune of some €340,000 ($300,000), with payments used to hire staff for party work in France, rather than to assist MEPs in the European Parliament. She was also charged for being complicit in the whole party's breach of trust, as the party leader.

Marine Le Pen has been charged over claims her party illegally claimed millions of Euros from the European Parliament.

The fake jobs scandal implicating Le Pen started with an expenses inquiry in which the European Parliament first accused her far-right National Front party of defrauding it to the tune of some Euro 340,000 (USD 360,000).

In her manifesto Le Pen promised to create an "improved" form of civil unions in the country to "replace" the equal marriage law passed under the current Socialist government.

Le Pen's lawyer, Rodolphe Bosselut, said she had been summoned by investigating magistrates in Paris and that they had, "as expected, charged her", adding that she would appeal.

She was defeated by Mr Emmanuel Macron, an independent centrist, in the second round of the presidential elections in May, but managed to win a seat in the National Assembly, France's Lower House of Parliament, in June. Aliot last week refused to respond to a summons by investigators, French media reported.
