Mahershala Ali May Take on True Detective -- but Who Else Will Join?

According to The Tracking Board, the Academy Award winning actor for "Moonlight", Mahershala Ali, is in talks to star in a potential third season of the show, and is expected to close a deal sometime soon.

It was previously reported that two episodes of True Detective season three have already been written by creator Nic Pizzolatto for a possible pickup. It seems that getting an actor right after they win an Oscar leads to a more successful season. It aired in 2015 and starred Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn, and Rachel McAdams.

While the debut season of True Detective garnered critical acclaim and became a pop culture phenomenon, the sophomore season was widely panned, raising questions about the series' future.

HBO's head of programming Casey Bloys last summer called the project "a valuable franchise" and acknowledged the network was still "open to another season", assuring fans "it's not dead".

Should the third season go in a different direction, Ali certainly has the emotional range and charisma to handle anything they throw at him.

Now it might seem odd that "True Detective" season 3 hasn't even been made official so why is casting already going on?

"Our biggest failures-and I don't know if I would consider "True Detective"-but when we tell somebody to hit an air date as opposed to allowing the writing to find its own natural resting place, when it's ready, when it's baked-we've failed", he said". Unfortunately, there are no details now available about the potential plot of Season 3, so we can't even guess what kind of character Ali would play.

It's important to note that Ali's deal has not yet been closed and that HBO still has yet to officially announce a third season. He had to reinvent the wheel, so to speak.
