New Jersey shutdown: 'Gov. Christie, get the hell off the beach!'
Jul 03, 2017, 01:27
New Jersey Governor Chris Christie declared a state of emergency just after midnight on Saturday and shut down the government because legislators failed to pass a budget by the annual deadline.
While the Senate passed the Horizon bill on Friday, Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto has refused to post it for a vote, and the budget he posted on Friday without the Horizon bill fell far short of a majority.
Christie has cast Horizon, which opposes the measure and has parked a mobile video billboard displaying anti-Christie videos near his office this week, as a giant, greedy company that is abandoning the charitable mission the state had in mind when the state designated it as a health services corporation. That means people will be locked out of state parks and unable to obtain birth and marriage certificates or process unemployment claims.
Another special legislative session has been called for 2 p.m. Sunday.
The shutdown of the state's government is complicated and based on the state government's failure to pass a budget and a fight over health care overhaul to Horizon, the state's largest healthcare provider, which was proposed by Christie.
There, plastered over the wooded entrance sign to the park were two posters with the words, "CLOSED", emblazoned over an unflattering photo of Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto.
Horizon said in a statement that CEO Bob Marino would attend.
The last time that New Jersey experienced a government crisis was when the government was shut down in 2006 under the Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine.
Invoking Trump could resonate on another level in New Jersey, where Christie enthusiastically backed the president and now leads an anti-opioid addiction panel for the White House.
Though some signs have popped up around the state blaming the mess on Prieto, it's likely that the wildly unpopular Christie will ultimately take the fall. Road construction projects were required to wind down and motor vehicle offices were closed, although state-run parks, beaches, and historic sites remained open through July 4th.
"I feel awful for the people", Bateman said after leaving Trenton on Saturday.
In Pennsylvania, the main spending bill in a $32 billion bipartisan budget package is past the legislature on the state fiscal year's final day, although lawmakers don't know how it'll all be paid for. And while they plan to be at it again this morning, there's no sense that the impasse can be overcome. "We had an opportunity to get together in rooms over those hours and hammer out a compromise, and we didn't". Republican Gov. Chris Christie has said he would shut down government if he does not receive a budget. But on Friday evening, he intentionally kept the board open, telling reporters he had no intention of taking the vote down.
