Mexican prison riot leaves 28 inmates dead and three wounded

Authorities had initially reported five deaths, but later raised the toll more bodies were found scattered throughout the prison.

The victims were stabbed and beaten to death, and four were decapitated, a law enforcement official speaking on the condition of anonymity told Reuters.

A deadly clash between rival groups in the Mexican Pacific resort of Acapulco prison has left at least 28 inmates killed and several others wounded according to Mexican officials. Three inmates were also injured.

The clash follows the June release of a report by Mexico's National Commission for Human Rights that warned that numerous country's prisons are unsafe, overcrowded and understaffed, The Associated Press reported.

At a press conference, Guerrero's security spokesperson, Roberto Alvarez Heredia, said that the fight began around 4 a.m.in Las Cruces prison in Acupalco.

It was built for 1,624 inmates but had 1,951 men and 110 women behind its walls, he said.

In March 2017, 29 accused drug cartel members allegedly tunneled their way out of a prison in Tamaulipas state.

The prison system, the mexican, overcrowded and often controlled by criminal groups, had been strongly criticised in January after a violent mutiny in a prison in Monterrey, where 49 inmates were killed.

Kelly, one of the main links between the Mexican government and the Trump administration on migration and security cooperation, arrived in Mexico on Wednesday and has held meetings with top officials including President Enrique Pena Nieto.
