California politics updates: Gov. Brown announcing climate summit

Since Trump quit the Paris accord on climate change, California and a dozen other states have vowed to not only stick with the agreement, but also step up their emission reduction efforts to push the rest of the country along.

The summit in San Francisco, coming ahead of the 24th United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Poland, will represent the first time a state has hosted an global climate change conference supporting the Paris accords.

At the beginning of June, Trump announced the USA would withdraw from the Paris Agreement and commence negotiations to re-enter or negotiate a new agreement, prompting a barrage of criticism from supporters of the accord.

In a video posted to YouTube, Brown took on Trump and said he does not speak for and reflect the desires on nearly 70 percent of Americans who want the government to be more "aggressive" in taking on climate change - not roll back protections.

It's unclear how Trump will respond to the state-level diplomacy. The accord, which includes almost 200 countries, aims to curb greenhouse-gas emissions and support clean energy projects.

Brown's summit announcement will come about a month after Trump vowed to pull the United States out of the Paris Agreement on climate change. Climate, particularly in the wake of Trump's announcement that the USA would exit the Paris deal, was expected to be at the top of the meeting's agenda.

The announcement comes amid a flurry of climate-focused activity by the four-term Democrat, who is using his remaining months in office to draw deepening contrasts with Trump and the federal government on the need to act swiftly on climate change.

Brown has said his goal was not to antagonize Trump, The Times reports, but he insisted more needs to be done on climate change. The Global Citizen Festival was attended by thousands of people and featured remarks from Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Norway's Prime Minister Erna Solberg and Argentina's President Mauricio Macri and performances from Coldplay, Shakira, Pharrell Williams, Ellie Goulding and others.

Earlier this week, Brown joined the leaders of Baden-Württemberg, Catalonia and South Australia - all members of the Under2 Coalition - to urge the G20 to reaffirm its support for implementation of the Paris Agreement and to recognize the role of sub-national governments, states, regions and cities, in leading and delivering on climate action.

"Since the decision of the quit the Paris climate agreement, we are more determined than ever to make it successful", she said last week.
