Cruz Holds Austin Town Hall On Health Care With Veterans

(R-Texas), have reappeared in the high-stakes negotiation over healthcare reform.

The jeering throngs were frustrated mostly with Cruz' role in trying to pass the American Health Care Act, the Republican attempt to replace the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. Cruz said during Thursday's show it's been a promise since the legislation was signed in 2010.

Cruz's plan would lower costs, but people will lose coverage too, he said.

"Ted Cruz is no savior of healthcare", said Joe Miguez, an Army veteran.

Cruz has become one of the most important players in the debate over how to repeal Obamacare. The gist is this: Health insurers could sell non-Obamacare plans as long as they also sold Obamacare-compliant insurance. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, could potentially bridge the gap between moderate and conservative Republicans in both the Senate and the House, according to The Hill. Many argue that the Senate's health care plan would be detrimental to the disabled and those with pre-existing conditions.

"We actually go to do something that fixes the problem".

Not every Republican senator remains convinced by the Cruz amendment. Sen.

Protestors outside the town hall venue called for Cruz to vote "no" on the GOP's version of their healthcare bill.

These claims are getting strong pushback from Cruz defenders.

Since announcing his opposition to the bill, Cruz has met with McConnell and other Senate leaders and Vice President Mike Pence who have tried to get his support for the Senate plan.

The rallies have been organized by Concerned Veterans For America, a conservative leaning nonprofit advocacy group that has been pushing to allow veterans into private health care options rather than rely on the traditional VA bureaucracy.

"Make no mistake, the Cruz amendment is a hoax".

Meadows told reporters, "If the Cruz consumer choice amendment gets there, yes I can support it without the MacArthur amendment in there, because I think it gives everybody some options".

But they think it's more likely that the CBO analysis will be damning.

Cruz said if Republicans do that and premiums continue to skyrocket, "that's how you get a Speaker (Nancy) Pelosi or a leader Chuck Schumer". "If you look at what is happening with ObamaCare now people are hurting under it".

"It was so hard to go through the things that I went through with excellent private health insurance", she said.

"It hasn't been fleshed out yet, so I believe pre-existing conditions ought to be covered, and we shouldn't deny people coverage with pre-existing conditions, so that would have to be worked out", Sen.

"Right now I'm looking at the Cruz consumer choice amendment as the primary vehicle that makes the most sense to me", Meadows said, "and I applaud him for stepping out". (R-Mo.), a member of McConnell's leadership team, said in a statement the day the bill was made public.

The Cruz amendment could also help get the vote of Sen.

Cruz disputes claims that his proposal would destroy protections for people with pre-existing conditions.

"You would likely see some market segmentation".

"Bernie's view, he wants free everything for everyone", he said. Some conservatives, including Cruz, have backed repealing ObamaCare now, with a delayed "off ramp" and replacing it separately.

This puts McConnell and his leadership team in a very tough spot after the July Fourth recess, when the Senate is supposed to take up the bill. Vice President Pence would cast the tie-breaking vote.

Republicans control 52 seats and can afford only two defections and still pass the legislation.
