Party divisions extend to impression of higher education

A majority of Republicans think that institutions of higher education are bad for America, according to a Pew Research Center poll released Monday.

Overall, the majority of the USA public, or 55 percent, say they believe colleges and universities have positive effects on the way things are going in the United States. On higher education, 55 percent of all respondents had a positive view.

Just 39 percent overall have a positive view on banks while 46 percent of Republicans are positive. Over three surveys between 2010 and 2015, views of the news media among Democrats and Republicans followed the same trajectory, with Democrats less apt to see the media as having a negative effect on the way things were going in the U.S., but those in both parties shifting slightly more negative over time. That's about the same percentage of Republicans past year who thought the news media had a negative impact on the country's direction, though that's up from 68 percent in 2010.

Why surprising? Because the media is overwhelmingly liberally biased.

"Majorities of both conservative Republicans and Republican leaners (75%) and moderate and liberal Republicans (68%) say churches and religious organizations have a positive impact". The error attributable to sampling that would be expected at the 95 percent level of confidence is at +/- 2.3 percentage points. For example, Republicans have much more negative views of the press than Democrats, while Democrats have greater faith in labor unions.

And more than half (52 percent) of Republicans aged 18 to 29 view colleges positively. It dropped by 20 percentage points (from 57 percent to 37 percent) among Republicans who do not have a college degree.

You can view the full survey findings here. This may be why Republicans are increasingly keen to disapprove of colleges, as they see them as bastions of liberal thinking. Forty-four percent of these Republicans view the institutions negatively today, down from 65 percent in 2015. In an email to Inside Higher Ed, Alison Kadlec, senior vice president and director of higher education and work force engagement for Public Agenda, questioned the reason behind the pessimistic sentiments.
