President Condemns Attack on Amarnath Yatris in Jammu and Kashmir

Ghaznavi said that Kashmiris have never targeted any pilgrim.

Six women and a man died when unidentified gunmen opened fire late Monday on a bus carrying Hindus on the annual pilgrimage to a Himalayan cave revered as the abode of the god Shiva.

The victims had been on a pilgrimage through the Himalayan valley, a long-disputed region on the border between India and Pakistan, returning after paying their respects at a Hindu shrine in Amarnath cave.

The Centre on Tuesday appealed to all pilgrims undertaking the pilgrimage to the Amarnath cave shrine to follow existing safety protocols and to cooperate with the administration.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has denounced the attack on Amarnath pilgrims in Jammu & Kashmir and said the attack signifies the rise of extremism within the ranks of militants. How did the bus manage to ply after 7 pm when there is a rule that no vehicle carrying Amarnath pilgrims should move after 7 in the evening.

The attack triggered widespread condemnation.

General Bipin Rawat also met Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti to discuss several security related issues in the wake of the terror attack.

Amid the grim and gloomy tales of the attack shone through the story of wisdom and courage of the Muslim driver of the bus-Salim Sheikh-whose quick thinking saved the lives of many.

Now consider this, since the bus was not registered and was not part of the convoy to Amarnath yatra, there was no information whatsoever about its movement.

A pall of gloom enveloped the airport when an Indian Air Force's Hurcules transport aircraft landed here with the bodies, the wounded, and those who miraculously survived the ambush, amid a high alert in the state. Many said that often, local vehicles were allowed to proceed to the Baltal camp without registration after some informal procedure, and that only pilgrims needed to register. The mortal remains of seven pilgrims, the 19 injured and remaining 32 were airlifted today in a special aircraft from Srinagar and were taken to Surat. "We should also keep in mind what China is doing on the Sikkim border." said the Lok Sabha member.

The attack coincided with the first anniversary of the death of Burhan Wani, a 21-year-old commander of the militant separatist group Hizbul Mujaheedin.

"In Kashmir, the security forces have cornered the militants and started wiping them out". The police said the terrorists had initially attacked a police Bullet Proof bunker near Botengoo locality in the area. "We need to be pragmatic and tone down the current rhetoric on terror attacks", said a senior security official.
