Net Neutrality Fight Takes Over the Web Today

Google, Facebook, Amazon and Airbnb are just some of the firms taking part in a "day of action" against the new head of the Federal Communications Commission, Ajit Pai, who has openly criticized 2015's "open Internet" rules as "heavy handed", and who wants to reduce regulation on web services. Without these mandates, websites could put a chokehold on downloading and streaming content speeds for some users and not others - likely the ones willing to whip out the credit cards.

However, the newspaper says net neutrality is under fire in the United States, as the FCC is now looking to repeal the net neutrality rules introduced in 2015.

Right now, net neutrality is protected by Title II of the Communications Act, which considers ISPs "common carriers" and subject to regulations similar to utility providers. It allows for free, un-throttled use of the internet across the board, while preventing internet service providers from creating paid fast lanes for specific content. "Defend net neutrality. Take action", with a link to the website of Internet Association, a trade group of more than 40 Silicon Valley companies.

"The FCC and everyone in this city is going to know what the political consequences are if net neutrality is repealed", added Sen.

Scurato's push to make the complaints public comes as net neutrality proponents wage a Day of Action and advocates on both sides of the issue submit comments to the FCC about Pai's proposal to repeal the 2015 Open Internet Order.

"Nothing in this part prohibits reasonable efforts by a provider of broadband Internet access service to address copyright infringement or other unlawful activity". The ACLU had a large pop-up reading "Trump's FCC wants to kill net neutrality. Existing net neutrality rules should be enforced and kept intact".

Etsy's net neutrality banner. But this Wednesday the internet is fighting back with a nationwide day of action.

The US communications regulator FCC voted to overturn rules implemented during Barack Obama's presidency which forbade internet service providers (ISPs) from favouring certain services over others past year.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation, a leading digital civil liberties organisation, claims that more than 40 ISPs across the U.S. have written to the FCC to explain that Title II has not hurt their ability to develop and expand their networks.

What does net neutrality mean?
.

In May, the FCC proposed restoring "the internet to a light-touch regulatory framework by classifying broadband internet access service as an information service" and asked for public comments on the proposal. While the FCC argues regulation hurts innovation, the organizers of the protest-which includes messages on participating websites-accuse the FCC of caving to "lobbyists from telecom companies in pursuit of more power".
