Jaguar E-Pace launched with record-breaking barrel roll

During an worldwide launch event in London yesterday, the driver took the all-new compact SUV for a 270-degree corkscrew-like spin, careened off a dirt hump, and safely landed.

Despite the low starting price, all Australian variants will be all-wheel-drive and paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission.

Austrian contract carmaker Magna Steyr, a unit of Magna International, and JLR's plant in China, which is a joint partnership with Chinese automaker Chery, will produce the E-PACE. The roofline and sides have been inspired by the F-Type.

Not surprisingly, the E-Pace follows the same design philosophy which has proven successful in the bigger F-Pace: make it look as much like a sports auto as possible.

Not since the X-Type has a Jaguar been offered in front-wheel drive, but you can have exactly that (as rumoured) for the E-Pace. The Porsche Macan will likely be the E-Pace's biggest competitor, Jaguar officials say. The F-Pace has been soaking up praise left, right and centre and the Special Vehicle Operations division just unveiled the almighty XE SV Project 8.

Drivers can spec a "a 12.3ins TFT digital instrument panel and a head-up display", says AutoExpress, while all models come fitted with a "10.2ins touchscreen for the infotainment system". The unit now gets the Jaguar's InControl Pro suite of apps, while the company does say Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will be offered in the future. Instead, it comes with a sports stick shifter that looks like a conventional gear stick.

The E-pace is offered with Jaguar's InControl connectivity features, with optional 4G wifi connecting up to eight devices, and five USB charging ports.

It might be compact, but beneath that suspiciously impractical-looking tailgate is an 806mm long luggage bay with space for 577 litres of cargo, and a quick sit in the back seat indicated adequate leg and head room for a pair of 182cm adults.

The Jaguar E-Pace will be offered with three diesel Ingenium engines, ranging from 150PS and 380NM of torque to 240PS and 500Nm.

The 249PS model completes the 0-62mph sprint in seven seconds while the top 300PS version will achieve it in 6.4 seconds.

The five-door, five-seater will be built in Austria, rather than at Halewood, UK alongside the Discovery Sport and its Range Rover Evoque sibling.

Grant had done one of his previous record-breaking stunts in a Jaguar F-Pace but had never before done the barrel run. A First Edition model will be exclusively available for the first year, priced at £47,500, available with either the 178bhp diesel or 246bhp petrol engine and based on the R-Dynamic SE specification pack. With prices expected to start from around $48,000, it will be the least expensive vehicle in Jaguar's range and will go head-to-head with rivals such as Audi's Q3 and BMW's X1. And it won't be the final SUV from Jaguar - an all-electric model, the I-Pace, launches in 2018.
