Astronaut trio launches to International Space Station

A Russian Soyuz rocket launched three veteran space travelers from the U.S., Russia and Italy into orbit Friday (July 28), kicking off a five-month mission to the International Space Station.

Randy "Komrade" Bresnik, along with crew mates Sergey Ryazanskiy of Roscosmos and Paolo Nespoli of ESA blasted off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan just before noon on Friday. It was 9:41 p.m. local time at the launch site.

Over the past 25 years, nine other UT alums-eight from the UT Space Institute and one from UT College of Medicine-have totaled more than 1,000 days in space.

NASA reported that Flight Engineer Whitson earlier this week was doing research for a cancer study that may help develop more effective treatments for cancer patients. The spacecraft will perform a flight to the ISS using a shortened six-hour scheme to allow the new expedition to arrive at the docking port of the Rassvet module already at 01:01 a.m. Moscow time on July 29.
