Woman who convinced boyfriend to kill himself faces sentencing

"You said you were gonna do it", she also said.

The judge also ordered that Carter could not profit from the death of Roy.

In convicting Carter, the judge focused his ruling on Carter telling Roy to "get back in" after he climbed out of his truck as it was filling with carbon monoxide and told her he was afraid.

Going into the trial, experts thought that Carter would not be sentenced anywhere near 20 years because she was a minor when the incident occurred according to CNN.

Attorney Joseph P. Cataldo, who is representing Carter, declined to comment on the sentencing or possibility of an appeal.

Despite her own mental health struggles, Moniz said Carter had a responsibility to take action to stop a life-threatening risk. But Carter had sent Roy scores of texts encouraging him to kill himself. A psychiatrist testified Carter too was "very troubled" and at first tried to talk Roy out of it, but became convinced she needed to help Roy "get to heaven" only after he convinced her there was nothing she could do to stop him. Carter wrote in one text to Roy of his suicide. At one point he stopped the suicide attempt, but Carter encouraged him to follow through.

"They say things like "she made a mistake". Are some of them expressing forgiveness?"

An FIR under Section of 147, 148,307,323, 332, 353,427, 120-B of the Ranbir Penal Code has been registered in the incident. "Two of them have received grievous injuries", a police official said.

In statements read in court before the sentencing, Roy's family asked the judge to impose the maximum sentence. "Take away the spotlight she so desperately craves". "Twenty years may seem extreme but it's 20 more than Conrad will ever have".

However, the judge granted Carter a stay of incarceration, meaning Carter will not serve time behind bars until she has exhausted her appeals in state court.

"[I never] tried harder in my life to save someone as hard as I did him, and I'll always feel at fault, like I could have did something more", she wrote afterward on Roy's Facebook page. "I ask of you to invoke leniency in your decision-making process for my loving child Michelle".

In a letter written to Moniz last month and obtained by the Boston Herald, Carter's father David Carter wrote, "I pray to God you will take into consideration that Michelle was a troubled, vulnerable teenager in an extremely hard situation and made a tragic mistake".

Carter was convicted June 16 in Bristol Juvenile Court in a case that could have broad implications for how prosecutors and judges address criminal intent in the age of instant communication and ubiquitous social media engagement.

During the trial, Assistant District Attorneys Flynn and Katie Rayburn pointed to Carter's actions after Roy's death, including describing herself as a mental health advocate to friends and sparring with Roy's best friend over credit for a memorial baseball tournament in Roy's honor, as evidence that she was seeking to socially profit from his death.
