Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier congratulated Rouhani on his re-election as the President of Iran and affirmed India's commitment to strengthen the special relations between the countries.

After being sworn in on Saturday, Rouhani will have two weeks to present his cabinet to the parliament for a vote of confidence.

Rouhani won the endorsement of Iran's supreme leader for his second term as president on Thursday (August 3) after an easy election win, pledging to open Iran to foreign trade and investment but facing internal hardline resistance and renewed USA antagonism.

"I confirm the vote and appoint you as president of the republic", Khamenei said on August 3 at a ceremony in Tehran that was attended by Iranian officials and foreign dignitaries.

Today, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani will be sworn in for his second term.

"Iran's judicial and security bodies have waged a vicious crackdown against human rights defenders since Hassan Rouhani became president in 2013, demonizing and imprisoning activists who dare to stand up for people's rights", Amnesty International reported.

Khamenei took a tougher line, saying Iran must not fall for Washington's "tricks". The bill aims to stop anyone who's dealt with the Iranian ballistic missile program from entering the USA, and blocks those associated with the program from buying or selling property held in the U.S.

In a meeting with Mogherini prior to the ceremony, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said the European Union needs to be "alert" to Trump's efforts "to undermine the deal laying the blame on Iran".

The move by Trump is likely to embolden his hardline critics, who say the nuclear deal was a form of capitulation.

"In our view the nuclear deal has been violated and we will show an appropriate and proportional reaction to this issue", Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said in an interview with state TV, according to the ISNA news agency. Further complicating matters, US President Donald Trump has openly discouraged foreign investment in Iran and signed new sanctions on Wednesday.

Zimbabwe, like Iran, is also under USA sanctions imposed for implementing agrarian reforms that corrected imbalances in land ownership between the majority blacks and the minority whites.
