Netanyahu's former aide to testify in bribery case

The Israeli Supreme Court has ordered Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to provide information on conversations with Israel Hayom newspaper's owner and editor-in-chief. Another investigation, Case 3000, centers on potential misdealings in a multi-billion shekel deal to purchase naval vessels from Germany.

Israel's justice minister says even if Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is indicted on corruption charges he is not compelled to resign.

In 2003, he staged a comeback, and served for two years as finance minister, only to have it surface after the 2009 victory that heralded his current terms as prime minister that he and his family had accepted expensive vacations and dinners at the expense of well-heeled businessmen; the obvious implication was that there would be some quid for that quo.

A document the police filed with the court on Thursday shows the investigations involve "suspicion of the commission of felonies of bribery, fraud and breach of trust". Germany postponed the submarine deal due to the investigation.

Netanyahu has denied wrongdoing, calling the allegations a witch hunt. In so-called Case 1000, Netanyahu and his wife, Sara, are suspected of receiving illicit gifts from billionaire benefactors, whereas Case 2000 involves an alleged deal between Netanyahu and the publisher of Yedioth Ahronoth, a widely circulated Hebrew-language daily, that would have seen the premier support legislation to shutter a rival newspaper in return for more favorable coverage from Yedioth.
