Iran threatens to quit nuclear deal if USA imposes sanctions

Rouhani said Trump had shown he was an unreliable partner not just for Iran but for United States allies.

"I hope that the USA will not violate the obligations it has assumed", Xinhua news agency quoted Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov as saying on Wednesday.

Moscow hopes that Tehran will not quit the nuclear program agreement and that Washington will not violate its obligations under that document, too, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said. Since then Congress has voted for sanctions against parts of...

Under the deal, Iran agrees to halt its nuclear weapons program in exchange for easing the economic sanctions imposed by the US-led countries.

"Unilateral sanctions are unacceptable in principle and irresponsible if they are used to change in one's favor a well-calibrated balance (as is the case with the Iran nuclear deal) because they may upset this balance", Lavrov said.

Remaining U.S. sanctions on Iran make it hard to do business with the country.

"The Americans are categorically against the principle". The US reached a deal with Iran in 2015 under President Obama.

"The deal was a model of the victory of peace and diplomacy over war and unilateralism", said Rouhani.

Qassemi further underlined Tehran's adherence to both the text and spirit of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), a nuclear deal between Iran and world powers, saying it has been confirmed times and again by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and by other JCPOA parties.

"It should now be clear that Donald Trump's moves to violate and hold certification of the Iran nuclear deal in doubt are actively destabilizing the accord. It was Iran's preference, but it was not and will not remain Iran's only option", he added.

"The full implementation of the nuclear deal benefits the European Union and the region; therefore, it is necessary that the European Union increases its efforts and role in this regard", Rouhani was quoted by the FARS news agency as saying.

Did anyone honestly think Iran would not try to find a way to restart its nuclear program?

Rouhani, who helped steer the post-sanction economy, set a goal of signing 10 new development deals by the end of the Iranian calendar year, March 20.

According to Davidson, Washington needed to show to its allies in the region, including Riyadh, that it was "tough" on Iran, but the two sides realized that the nuclear deal was good for business, so neither was likely to willingly lose these advantages.

He recommended the United States to be realistic about Iran's "unmatched role in fighting terrorism in the Middle East".
