Sensex, Nifty extend gain for 3rd day; GMR Infra, Infosys jump

The benchmark BSE Sensex surged over 300 points and the NSE Nifty reclaimed the 9,900- level in closing hour of trade Wednesday, enthused by higher capital inflows by domestic investors.

Mild bouts of buying was witnessed in FMCG, auto, realty, healthcare and consumer durable sectors.

Infosys' buyback decision has come in the back of massive investors' pressure who wanted the company to utilise its cash reserves of $6 billion either through share buyback or generous dividend.

Infosys drove gains in the Nifty IT index, which climbed as much as 1.4% in its biggest intraday percentage gain in almost a month.

Markets remained closed yesterday on account of Independence Day. It was followed by Jaiprakash Associates (1.48 million), Sintex Industries (1.07 million) and Spicejet (0.88 million). The company said it will consider the share buyback at a board meeting on August 19. 519 shares advanced against a decline of 252 shares, while 25 shares were unchanged displaying a healthy market breadth.

Overseas, most Asian markets were trading higher as geo-political tensions in the region continued to recede.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng was up 0.45 per cent, while Japan's Nikkei gained 0.02 per cent in their early trade.

■ 9.40am: Coal India Ltd rose 2.4% to Rs242.65 after a huge block deal.

BSE Mid-cap index closed lower by 0.35% at 15,228.

Shares of GMR Infrastructure hogged limelight after the Supreme Court of India allowed Delhi International Airport (DIAL) to use airport land for commercial purposes.
