Six police officers shot, two dead in Florida and Pennsylvania

Florida authorities say two Kissimmee police officers have been shot.

Two Kissimmee police officers were shot and killed Friday night, and one person was taken into custody, authorities said. They didn't have a chance to return fire.

Kissimee Police Officer Matthew Baxter, left, was a three-year veteran of the police force and a father of three. "It's too early to tell" O'Dell said when asked if it was an ambush, but added "it's leading that way".

Baxter, a three-year-veteran of the Kissimmee Police Department, was pronounced dead.

President Trump reacted to the Kissimmee shootings, tweeting, "My thoughts and prayers are with the @KissimmeePolice and their loved ones". "Praying for these officers who were shot tonight", Gov. Scott said of the Jacksonville officers. "Following last night's shooting, I have been in touch with local law enforcement and community officials to let them know that our state supports them every step of the way". Baxter later died from his injuries and Howard is in grave condition, Kissimmee police department said on Twitter. The early stages of the investigation shows that Miller had made threats to law enforcement on Facebook, O'Dell said.

O'Dell said the department receives many calls to the area the officers were shot.

Kissimmee has 104 officers, The Orlando Sentinel says. Five minutes later, dispatchers received the first call reporting the officers had been shot. Police said in a news briefing that the officers were shot with a high-powered rifle through a door when they arrived at the scene.

In Jacksonville, the two officers were shot on the city's west side at about 11 p.m., the Sheriff's Office said.

The Kissimmee incident was among a string of police shootings Friday night in Florida and Pennsylvania in which six officers were shot.

Both troopers are expected to survive. Both were stable and alert, officials said. The officers' names are not being released at this time.
