Malaysian FM Apologizes to Indonesia for Flag Blunder

INDONESIAN hackers allegedly attacked several Malaysian websites, following the flag fiasco in a guidebook produced for the 29th Sea Games, reports the BBC today.

On Twitter, Indonesians said their flag represents the sacrifices of independence heroes and accused Malaysia of either being stupid or deliberately misprinting it.

At least 33 local websites have been hacked and defaced by Indonesian hacker group KidsZonk, who are ostensibly unhappy by the flag blunder in the official souvenir booklet of the Kuala Lumpur SEA Games 2017.

The error made the red-and-white Indonesian flag resemble Poland's and caused anger in Indonesia, where "shameonyoumalaysia" has become the most popular hashtag on Twitter.

President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo demanded an apology for hurt national pride but also cautioned against exaggerating the incident with his neighbour.

"Friendship is the greatest legacy in sports, but a mistake in presenting a national identity of a nation is not justified".

"The incident is real and we are doing the investigation, monitoring and working closely with other agencies to mitigate this incident", he said in a statement. Bukit Aman federal police special branch director Seri Mohamad Fuzi Harun said: "Perhaps it was a technical error".

Malaysia apologised on Sunday for the upside-down printing of Indonesia's flag in the souvenir guidebook for the Southeast Asia Games, which officials said is being withdrawn and reprinted.

Pictures of the upside down Indonesian flag began circulating online shortly after the guidebook was handed out at the opening of the games in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday.
