Sun & Clouds For Today's Eclipse

A cloud cover is in the forecast for most of the region on Monday, Aug. 21, when there will be a solar eclipse.

Though some clouds are possible along the OR coast, clear skies are expected in cities such as Salem, Ore.; Boise, Idaho; and Casper, Wyo., according to the National Weather Service. Conditions are expected to remain partly to mostly sunny in the early afternoon as the eclipse moves toward its max coverage. The next solar eclipse that will be visible throughout all of North America will be in 2024, and this is the first for us since 1979. We're not talking overcast skies, but a few clouds will develop with some higher thin clouds rolling in from a couple storm complexes to our west and northwest.

Monday's chances for scattered storms will diminish about sunset. This front brings the possibility of severe storms but the late night/early day timing may again save us from seeing widespread severe storms.

We have a cloud problem.

Remember that, to view the solar eclipse live, you need special glasses!

For Sunday, you'll wake up to mostly sunny skies with a 60 percent chance of afternoon and evening scattered showers and storms.

The total eclipse will last two minutes, 2:46 p.m.to 2:48 p.m., but the partial eclipse starts at 1:17 p.m. and ends at 4:10 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

In the Omaha area, high temperatures today are expected to top out in the mid-80s.

Mid-level clouds might increase into the afternoon, especially in southeast Nebraska, doing more to obscure the eclipse.

Saturday was a hot and muggy day with a few passing showers and thunderstorms. Highs top out near 90º with heat index values running from the mid-upper 90's.

A cold front will push through the area on Thursday.
