Charity group wants your eclipse glasses

If you've heard rumors that the solar filters on eclipse glasses expire after 3 years, ignore them.

There are several options! And now that the sun is shining bright again, you really don't have much use for them anymore, right?

For owners of the eyewear, we hope that you did not just take them off and litter the place where you watched the total solar eclipse.

Furlow Charter School is collecting solar glasses from the August 21 solar eclipse to donate to Astronomers Without Borders.

You could recycle them: Groups like Astronomers without Borders or South Carolina's Midlands Astronomy Club are accepting donations of eclipse glasses so they can be used at schools and in other countries, or be redistributed.

The Calabasas, Calif. -based nonprofit says it is developing a corporate-backed plan to collect the millions of glasses bought by viewers in the United States before the August 21 solar eclipse.

Those eclipse glasses were such a prized commodity heading into Monday.

For many people, the answer may be: donate them! It's easy to tell if your eclipse glasses will still be good by checking their ISO standard number. Because they're so cheap (if you buy in advance), it probably wouldn't hurt to get a new pair. American Paper Optics had a goal of producing 100 million pairs of eclipse viewers prior to totality, according to a statement.

Of course, many people may have had such a life-changing experience during the eclipse that they want to re-create it as soon as possible. Check out the Facebook page of Astronomers Without Borders for info.
