Gunmen Attack Shi'ite Mosque In Kabul, Casualties Feared

Afghan security forces arrive at the site of a suicide attack followed by a clash between Afghan forces and insurgents after an attack on a Shi'ite Muslim mosque in Kabul, Afghanistan, August 25, 2017. No outfit has claimed responsibility for the terrorist attack so far.

From around 1pm local time, gunshots and explosions could be heard and witnesses reported seeing worshippers smash windows to escape the building, which was believed to have been packed with dozens of men, women and children when the assailants struck during Friday prayers.

An armed group claiming allegiance to the Islamic State in Khorasan Province (ISKP) reportedly claimed responsibility.

At least 14 people have been killed and injured after gunmen attacked a mosque in the Afghan capital on Friday.

A spokesman for the Taliban Zabiullah Mujahid in a statement said such attacks are an attempt to spark tensions among the people. Last month, the Islamic State group attacked the Iraqi Embassy in Kabul and afterward, issued a warning to all Shiites in Afghanistan, saying IS militants would attack Shiite places of worship.

That official was replaced by the then-national police chief, whose role in turn was given to Priewpan Damapong. He added that he'd been "happy" when informed earlier that Yingluck would be at the court for the verdict.

Elsewhere, provincial deputy police chief Nisar Ahmad Abdul Rahimzai said that Afghan security forces recaptured a district in eastern Paktia province from the insurgents.

Eyewitnesses told TOLOnews that the attackers killed the guards & entered the mosque at 1:15pm. After the suicide blast, gunmen attacked the mosque in Qala-e-Najarha area in Kabul's PD11 on Friday afternoon, the Ministry of Interior confirmed. There has been no immediate comment from the Taliban.

The assault was repulsed by the security forces with the help of the Afghan Air Force.
