Sebastian Gorka Leaves the White House - What's Next?

The former Brietbart editor reportedly turned in his resignation letter after White House Chief of Staff John Kelly revoked his security clearance when he was still on vacation.

"Sebastian Gorka did not resign, but I can confirm he no longer works at the White House", an official told reporters according to CNN.

Gorka was aligned with a once-ascendant nationalist arm of the Trump administration, occupied most prominently by Bannon and senior policy adviser Stephen Miller.

Gorka later told a reporter it was "disappointing" that the White House was saying he was sacked because "I resigned". Gorka's ouster also reflects the ascendancy of new Trump national security adviser H.R. McMaster, who appears to have strongly influenced Trump's new interventionist stance on Afghanistan.

Gorka's departure came Friday night amid a series of announcements from the White House, including a presidential directive banning transgender recruits, the pardoning of controversial former Sheriff Joe Arpaio and a major disaster declaration for areas affected by Hurricane Harvey. He also said he's planning to return to Breitbart to work with Steve Bannon.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said today that the "conditions on the ground" in Afghanistan would determine the number of American troops in the war-torn country and the new U.S. strategy was meant to send a strong message to the Taliban that "we are not going anywhere".

Bannon had been under fire since he began working for the Trump campaign past year.

The former White House deputy assistant noted that he made a decision to resign shortly after Trump delivered his Tuesday speech on Afghanistan in which he introduced a foreign policy that would deploy more troops in Afghanistan while exhibiting a dramatic reversal from the non-interventionism he ran on.

"Fox News Sunday" host Chris Wallace asked Tillerson about Gorka's accusations, especially regarding the president's recent speech on Afghanistan.

Researcher Michael Smith needled Gorka with accusations like that on Twitter until, in February, Gorka called him from his personal cellphone and threatened to refer the posts to the White House's legal counsel.

He went on to say, "Anybody who downplays the role of religious ideology.they are deleting reality to fit their own world", he said. A Republican with close ties to the White House told BuzzFeed that the statement marked the "first time I have ever seen surrogate operations send out something like this".

Gorka said on Saturday: "I decided, just as with Steve, we can be far more effective for the president on the outside, and it's a very exciting day for me and my family to start again supporting the MAGA message as private citizens".

"In the White House I had influence", he said during the interview.
