Tropical Storm Irma could form soon off the East Coast

Some strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours, and the system is expected to become a tropical storm tonight or Monday.

While Hurricane Harvey devastates the western Gulf Coast region, a weak tropical system may form off the Southeastern U.S. coast early this week, per the National Weather Service office in Newport/Morehead City. Again, heavy rounds of rain will be hitting the coast at these times, with occasional winds gusting over 40 miles per hour. If the system does acquire a name, the small craft advisory would be replaced with warnings of tropical storm hazards. The Hurricane Center may fly a plane out to investigate the area of low pressure later today. There will be the possibility of some localized flooding in spots. Other impressive rainfall totals since Wednesday include 8.25 inches in Fort Myers and 6.49 inches in Naples.

Depending on how closely the low tracks to the Southeast coast early this week, areas as far north as the coastal Carolinas could see bands of heavy rain.

The system is then forecast to hug the coast of North and South Carolina Monday evening into Tuesday morning.

Regardless of how the system develops, the low was expected to cause increased winds and rough surf along the Georgia, North and SC coasts on Sunday and through mid-week. Rough surf and a threat of rip currents are likely.

Either way, unsettled weather is in the forecast with blustery winds and increasing chances of rain and thunderstorms Monday and Tuesday.
