In tragic news coming out of Arizona this week, Olympic runner David Torrence was found dead in an apartment complex swimming pool in Scottsdale in the early hours of Monday morning.

"Today we lost an unbelievable athlete and an even greater friend", fellow runner Kyle Merber tweeted Monday night. "The track world lost a great friend and athlete today", tweeted USA Track & Field. In 2007, Torrence set the current Cal record for the mile, and in 2014, he set the current American indoor track record for the 1000 meter race. The record still stands.

Torrence was well-liked among fellow runners and fans of the sport. A graduate of the University of California, Torrence chose to compete for Peru, his mother's home country, last summer in Rio and finished last in the 5,000 final.

He was involved in the investigation into Somalian coach Jama Aden, who was arrested by Spanish police past year as part of a probe into doping.
