Samsung takes the wraps off its new Gear Sport fitness smartwatch

Previous year we got two variants of the Gear S3, but this time around it looks like Samsung has put all its eggs in one basket with the Gear Sport. However, if those last two features really excited you, you are probably so invested in the Samsung ecosystem, you were already considering buying a Gear Sport anyways. Another IFA 2017 debutant from Samsung's wearables division is the Gear IconX 2018 edition: a massive upgrade over the 2016 wireless earbuds that could only muster 1.5 hours of wireless music streaming.

The Samsung Gear Sport has been officially unveiled at IFA 2017 in Berlin, and as the name suggests it's got a strong fitness focus, but there's also a stlylish metal design too. It's smaller than the Gear S3, too, which is nice for anyone that thought Samsung's last smartwatch was a little too bulky. It has 4GB Storage. The pricing and availability are yet to be announced. These kinds of practical features go beyond telling you to just go to the gym, and it's what makes the Gear Sport really stand out. The Gear Sport can control the Samsung IoT-enabled devices, act as a remote control for a PowerPoint presentation or Samsung Gear VR, and pay for goods via Samsung Pay (NFC Only).

It also looks like offline Spotify music is finally ready. At 11.6mm thick, it's still a hefty watch, but not unreasonably so-a Rolex Daytona measures 11.2mm.

It's not just a watch, though.

The Gear Sport handles all of the fitness tracking you expect from Samsung's wearables, including S Health integration water resistance and swim tracking, and heart rate monitoring, but there were some compromises made. That's important, as the Gear IconX can automatically track running routines when you start exercising. It's not almost the fitness beast Fitbit launched, which tracks your breathing and oxygen consumption and all sorts of other insane things, but Samsung's offering a lot of the same features in a much more attractive package. Samsung Gear Sport is powered by a dual core processor.

But even though the Gear Sport is considered a sports watch - it's also a jack of all trades.

It also inherits the full color, Always-On Display from the Gear S3 as well, ensuring key information - such as the time - is always displayed while using minimal power. Running on Tizen OS, it is compatible with Apple iPhones running iOS 9 and above, and Android smartphones running 4.3 JellyBean and above.

As of now, three different smartwatches line the top of the market. It is packed with features for people who see no boundary between their life and their wellness.

Big has worked for Samsung in the smartphone space, but the human body is less forgiving than trousers pockets, and the company ultimately did itself something of a disservice by creating the watch equivalent of the Galaxy Note.
