Venus Williams knocked out of US Open by Sloane Stephens

Keys has been lights out on hard court all season long and is now playing the best and most consistent tennis we've seen from her. Keys is in her first grand slam final appearance and is 3-3 in final appearances overall for her career. Her desire prevailed over experience and wisdom.

On Sept. 7, Sloane Stephens and Madison Keys set up a historic final at the U.S. Open after two impressive performances in the semifinal round. Stephens, who draws on her quickness and punch in tennis, has been recovering from that foot surgery.

She was trying to reach her third major final of this season, something she last did 15 years ago.

"In the end, she ended up winning more points than I did". Contrary to Stephens' match, there weren't any challenges for Keys to overcome in her match. Andy Roddick, at the 2003 US Open, was the last American male to win a Grand Slam. Keys struggled on return and Stephens broke twice with class, clean hitting from the baseline.

Keys defeated CoCo Vandeweghe 6-1, 6-2 in less than an hour. Keys, 24, saw Williams defeat Lindsay Davenport in an all-American Wimbledon final in 2005 - which she watched on television as a 12-year-old.

"I don't know how I got here, just hard work, that's it".

"It's really fantastic. I have known Sloane for a long time and she's a close friend of mine". It hasn't always been pretty with Stephens this tournament, but she's willed her way to victory each time.

One of those emerging stars, Stephens, was just four years old when her opponent Thursday night, Venus Williams, debuted here as a 17-year-old back in 1997. Later, on moving to the second set, Willaim has given a tough fight to the Stephen by acquiring 6 points, Stephens at 0 points. And for the most part, it's only been Serena Williams, who gave birth to her first child on September 1st and isn't competing.

"I just don't want anyone to ever ask me about the state of American tennis ever again", Stephens said on court after the match.
