Frankfurt debut for 1000hp Mercedes-AMG Project One

We are drawing on our experiences and successes from three constructors' and drivers' world championships to bring Formula 1 technology to the road for the first time: "in Mercedes-AMG Project One".

If there was ever going to be a headline act here at the Frankfurt Motor Show it's the Mercedes-AMG Project ONE. With its Formula 1 hybrid technology, the Project One has over 1,000 horsepower and can reach speeds over 217 miles per hour.

"It's all about adrenaline", declared Dieter Zetsche, head of the Mercedes brand and CEO of its parent company, Daimler AG, as he let the statistics roll off his tongue.

This is really insane for a product road-legal vehicle and it doesn't help knowing that the Project One's shape will be greatly inspired by pure F1 cars. For those who aren't familiar with Formula One race technology, drivers like Hamilton are now running their circuits in hybrids, albeit very different ones from the likes of the Toyota Prius.

Starting with the engine, the 1.6-liter unit produces 612 horsepower by itself. Turbocharging helps, of course.

Mercedes-AMG released full details of its much-anticipated Project One today.

The front axle is purely electrically driven, with two 120-kW electric motors.

Speaking of which, the engine might be derived from F1 but it has been altered. The mystery has finally been revealed and it's one heck of a scary looking beast indeed. That should be no surprise, of course, as you can't fit two in an F1 vehicle.

Being a hybrid means the Project One makes good use of its power. This intake is one of many prominent vents that contribute both to cooling the powertrain and improving the Project One's aerodynamic efficiency. You'll find two real racing buckets and a pair of 10-inch displays that focus on driving and performance data.

The interior on the auto is very basic and features a squarish steering wheel with a set of screens to feed information to the driver. It marks yet another pinnacle of the successful, strategic development of Mercedes-AMG towards a performance and sports vehicle brand. Be pleased that at least there's an air conditioner.

Stopping performance comes from an advanced, weight-optimized ceramic high-performance compound braking system. You need more powah! Take the GT, which is a surprisingly relaxed vehicle to drive quickly.
