Frankfurt - Volkswagen T-Roc kicks off brand renewal

The company will spend $50 billion will be invested in battery production in order to support its ambitions to create a vast range of electric vehicles.

The German brand has revealed that the all-electric model will enter production in 2020 and has a vital role to play in VW's Strategy 2025 electric vehicle offensive.

Earlier this year, the automotive giant announced an initial $10 billion investment in electric vehicles (EVs), significantly lower than they were devoting even to gas-powered cars.

"The heated debate on driving bans in cities, on the future of diesel and e-mobility shows the times when our industry celebrated itself here in Frankfurt, basking in its own glory, are definitely over", said Mueller, who arrived on stage in a self-driving prototype dubbed Sedric.

The concept forms part of a new campaign for the German auto maker - one which will see its electrified vehicle range expanded with three models from 2020.

VW showed the first concept of the coupe-styled I.D. Crozz at the Shanghai auto show this year, saying it heralded a production version due to go on sale in 2020.

"The interior has also been re-equipped and further developed - as an Open Space - with a superior amount of space and highly versatile seating concept".

"There will be a coexistence between internal combustion engines and electric drive systems for a certain period", Mueller said to the BBC.

"Our task is to make modern technology available to many people". It is supposed to mark the new styling direction for future Skoda models, and if we were on Volkswagen's payroll working in the design department, we'd be anxious. This is especially important in times of technological transformation.

While this is a compact CUV, the German maker entices us to visions of the Crozz II handling like the Golf GTI thanks to implementations such as the electronically controlled dampers and a new multi-link rear suspension. The company is also looking into longer life vehicle batteries that could in the future offer a driving range of over 370 miles in one charge. It's also earmarking over 20 billion euros (about $23 billion) to fund the electrification transition. It's also expected to be able to charge to 80 percent in 30 minutes via a 150 kW DC fast charger. With the exception of Tesla, whose shares jumped 6% on Monday following China's weekend announcement, electric vehicle makers have had trouble penetrating the market.

Though the CROZZ was the fourth I.D. concept to be introduced, it will be the second in the series to reach production, according to Volkswagen.
