Isis fighter from USA surrenders before Syrian Democratic Forces

This undated file image posted on a militant website on January 14, 2014, which has been verified and is consistent with other AP reporting, shows fighters from the al-Qaida linked Islamic State in Raqqa, Syria.

An American citizen who was fighting alongside Isis in Syria has surrendered before US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), the Pentagon said on Thursday (14 September).

The report was also confirmed to CNN by an unnamed USA military official.

A U.S. citizen fighting alongside Islamic State terror group militants in Syria has been captured, the Daily Beast reported Thursday.

"And within that frame, the clashes are continuing since last night between the Syrian Democratic fighters and the ISIS mercenaries at the surrounding areas of al-Watani hospital and the Rashid garden located in al-Amin neighborhood that is in the city center", SDF detailed in a statement late on Tuesday night. In this case the proper authorities would be the equivalent of the department of state in the country.

He was detained by Kurdish peshmerga forces in northern Iraq in March 2016 and turned over to USA authorities.

Dillon said he could not immediately recall any other incident involving an American citizen in Iraq or Syria "either being captured or surrendering" after joining up with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. "As a precondition for Coalition support, SDF and Iraqi forces have pledged to observe global laws and the laws of armed conflict", the command told the Daily Beast.

Terming the Americans who joined the jihadist group in Iraq and Syria as "dumb", Nauert said: "It serves as a good reminder that in a nation of 330-some million people, some people will be dumb enough to go to Iraq and Syria to try to fight for ISIS".

A federal jury convicted Khweis, 27, in June of providing and conspiring to provide material support or resources to Islamic State, and a related firearms count.

Mohamad Jamal Khweis had agreed to become a suicide bomber but surrendered to Kurdish peshmerga forces in northern Iraq after becoming disillusioned.

The legal status of foreign fighters caught in Iraq and Syria has been on an ongoing issue for the Obama administration and now the Trump administration.
