Four female United States tourists attacked with acid in France

Authorities said two French nationals were arrested in Marseille before they were able to carry out what Paris prosecutor Francois Molins called an "imminent, violent action".

She said a 41 -year-old female suspect has been arrested.

Last month, a woman was killed in Marseille when a man deliberately drove a vehicle into two bus stops.

Two of the USA women suffered facial injuries in the attack, police said. The prosecutor's office has responsibility for all terror-related cases in France.

French authorities are not investigating the acid attack as an act of terrorism for the time being.

The spokeswoman for the Marseille prosecutor's office said the suspect did not make any extremist threats or declarations during the attack. Local media in Marseille reported, citing unidentified police sources, that the alleged assailant has a history of mental health problems and that she allegedly told responding officers she was a victim of acid abuse and wanted others to suffer like she did. He said the US consulate in Marseille is in contact with investigators. The two women reportedly sprayed with acid remain in hospital.

In late August, the southern French port city of Marseille made worldwide headlines when a van rammed into multiple bus stops, killing one person, in an act that authorities determined not to be terrorism.
