Turkey could stop Iraq's Kurdish oil exports for referendum

New York-Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has threatened Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdistan region with sanctions in case it goes ahead with plans to hold an independence referendum.

The Trump administration wants the Iraqi Kurds to cancel the vote.

Iran, with a sizeable Kurdish minority of its own, warned on Sunday that Iraqi Kurdish independence would mean an end to all border and security arrangements with the KRG.

Beyond the three provinces that have made up Iraqi Kurdistan since the fall of Saddam Hussein after a US-led invasion, Iraq's Kurds have also claimed territory in Kirkuk, as well as the Nineveh and Diyala provinces.

Barzani has said the Kurds will never surrender any of the territory they now hold in Iraq.

As for the independence of the Iraqi Kurdistan from the Armenian perspective, Vahram Petrosyan noted that holding the referendum once again highlights the factor of peoples' right to self-determination.

Tanks and troops have amassed on the frontier, training rocket launchers towards Iraqi Kurdistan.

Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu was asked in an interview with Al-Monitor whether the head of Turkish intelligence Hakan Fidan would travel to Erbil for talks about two senior Turkish intelligence officers.

Yes, I think we should not be surprised if the stated USA policy and the actual policy on this issue prove to be incongruent with each other. However, those in favour of creating an Independent Kurdish state count on U.S. support via Israel, the only regional country that has supported the creation of an independent Kurdistan in northern Iraq. The KRG pumps hundreds of thousands of barrels of oil per day and has approved plans for Russian oil major Rosneft to invest in pipelines to export gas to Turkey and Europe. He told an Iraqi news agency that the Kurds would be "playing with fire" by pushing for the vote in the Kurdish autonomous region.

This is evident from the fact that United States and the worldwide community have spent billions over the past decade to rebuild, strengthen and increase nation-building institutions, and yet despite this the Baghdad government still gives favouritism to its neighbouring Iranian ally.

People close to Manafort have suggested that his involvement in the Kurdish referendum could be related to the mounting financial pressure of paying for his legal defense, The Times said.
