Sadiq Khan asks TfL to meet Uber after CEO's apology

Uber's new CEO Dara Khosrowshahi acknowledged on Monday that the ride-hailing company has made mistakes, responding to London's decision to pull its operating license. TfL's licensing decision cites various criticisms, including Uber's approach to reporting criminal offences and how medical certificates and Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service ("EDBS") checks were obtained.

The Sun newspaper reported previous year that 32 sexual assault claims were made against Uber drivers in 2015/16, more than a fifth of all claims against taxi drivers filed to British police forces.

Also on the radio program was London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who said while he wants the city to be "a place for new technology", operators like Uber must "play by the rules". This stems from TfL's view that "Uber's approach and conduct demonstrate a lack of corporate responsibility in relation to a number of issues which have potential public safety and security implications".

TfL stunned the powerful USA start-up Friday when it deemed Uber unfit to run a taxi service for safety reasons and stripped it of its license from September 30, although the company can continue to operate while it appeals.

Khosrowshahi, the former CEO of travel website Expedia, replaced Uber founder Travis Kalanick as CEO just three weeks ago and he's got several major diplomatic battles to fight all over the world.

"On behalf of everyone at Uber globally", he wrote, "I apologize for the mistakes we've made".

An Uber spokesperson told the Welwyn Hatfield Times: "The recent decision taken by Transport for London only applies to Uber in the capital and does not impact Uber's licence in any other city".

The firm has until 14 October to formally appeal TfL's decision and the case is likely to be filed at Westminster Magistrates' Court in London.

Uber has also been kicked out of Germany and Spain but was able to return to both countries after agreeing to only employ licensed taxi drivers.

"This ban shows the world that London is far from being open and is closed to innovative companies, who bring choice to consumers and work opportunities to those who need them", the petition says.

According to the BBC, Khan welcomed Khosrowshahi's apology.

The current license expires on 30th September, and this has resulted to 680,000 petitions for Londoners wishing for the company to continue its operations in the city. These drivers are even more anxious that many of them are in debt by buying a new vehicle to drive for Uber. Earlier this year, Transport for London renewed its license on a limited basis, giving it six months to address concerns. The transport body also queried Uber's use of Greyball software, which could be used to block regulators' access to the app.

The trade union of employees, GMB has, however, hoped to reverse that other cities will follow London in banning Uber, accused of "social dumping".

"This was one of the unusual things around the TfL notice yesterday is they are the ones who do all of the checks and license the drivers".
