Long surviving Kashmiri terrorist killed at LoC

Security forces gunned down a wanted terrorist active in Kashmir for the last 17 years in an encounter along the Line of Control (LoC) in north Kashmir's Baramulla district on Tuesday.

It may be mentioned here that Najar broke away from the Hizbul Mujahideen and formed his own outfit Lashkar-e-Islam (LeI) which carried out a series of attacks on cellphone towers in the Kashmir valley.

"He was now tasked with reviving the outfit in Kashmir in the wake of elimination of top militants", he said. "Hizbul Mujahideen has nearly been wiped out from north Kashmir". Sources in agencies said that Qayoom had influence of Jaish-e-Mohammad, which had started footprints in Valley again by attacking security forces in South Kashmir. He further said that the killed terrorist had exfiltrated to Pakistan in 2015. The feud worsened when Qayoom warned mobile operators in Sopore town to shut down and killed local Hurriyat activist Sheikh Altaf-ur-Rehman.

Meanwhile, the police and Army launched massive searches for Najar after the civilian killings and attack on mobile towers. He had joined militancy at an early age of 16. "Najar was recalled to the base camp at Muzaffarabad in PoK to sort out differences", a source said.

"Security agencies kept on receiving regular inputs about the infiltration of militants along the LoC in Uri". Neutralising him would have been very hard as he was already heading a huge network in Sopore, Palhallan, Pattan, Handwara areas of Bandipora and Baramulla.

He was arrested in 1992 and later released. "It is a big relief for us", Hussain said. Previous year in 2016, 372 causalities were reported in Valley while the figure in 2015 was 197.
