Twitter reacts to Russell Westbrook signing extension on Kevin Durant's birthday

The person spoke Friday on condition of anonymity because the team had not disclosed the deal.

The proclamation comes after Westbrook signed a five-year, $205 million extension with the team on Friday.

Twitter dwellers noticed and celebrated an interesting coincidence - that the Westbrook-Thunder deal was finalized on Durant's 29th birthday.

After a year which saw him take on a massive load as the only star on the team, Westbrook will now be teaming up with All-Star duo Paul George and Carmelo Anthony. Instead, Westbrook will look to build a championship contender with Oklahoma City, and he will try to convince George and Anthony to remain with the Thunder long-term. With rumors swirling about Westbrook potentially being swayed to leave in free agency next summer, people were rightfully nervous.

Yesterday, Russell Westbrook signed the Richest contract in NBA History. As the Thunder have a strong starting lineup, it will be interesting if they attempt to improve their bench depth during the course of the 2017-18 National Basketball Association season.

Trump retweets doctored video of golf ball hitting Clinton
Clinton's new book about the campaign was released last week, and Trump has repeatedly used Twitter to deride her as a sore loser. While some Twitter users praised Trump for his "sense of humour" following the golf ball retweet, others berated him.

Russell Westbrook will be staying in Oklahoma City for the foreseeable future.

It's very much possible that Westbrook is now sold on the direction of the Thunder.

The timing of Westbrook's decision to sign the extension has also been a topic of interest across social media. OKC, a year after being an afterthought in the West, might actually be the biggest threat to the Warriors.

Westbrook, the league's reigning MVP, has been sitting on the deal for months; the Thunder first dangled the deal in July. They have been in a tight spot since Kevin Durant left the franchise past year, and losing Westbrook in the same fashion would have been a price that they certainly could not afford. The cap increased 5.25 percent this season and is projected by the National Basketball Association to increase less than 2 percent in 2018-19. That's a best-case scenario - if George and Anthony play out next season at their respective 2018-19 salaries of $20.7 million and $27.9 million. Oklahoma City is not a small market and typically has trouble attracting top free agents. No way. The mayor of Oklahoma City responded to Westbrook's decision with this pronouncement.
