Canada Terrorism Suspect Was Investigated for Extremism

An officer was "viciously stabbed" according to the Edmonton Police Service after a vehicle was driven into a police cruiser.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau denounced what he said had been a "terrorist attack" in Edmonton, the capital of Canada's oil-rich Alberta province. The driver jumped out of his vehicle and stabbed the officer "several" times before leaving the scene on foot.

He then jumped out of the vehicle and stabbed the cop "several times" and fled on foot as a dramatic manhunt was launched.

"During the chase, the U-Haul truck deliberately attempted to hit pedestrians in crosswalks and alleys", it said.

Based on the actions and the evidence at the scene, the incidents were being investigated as "acts of terrorism", police said.

The police officer was taken to hospital and treated for non life-threatening injuries. Four pedestrians were injured; two have been discharged from the hospital, while two are under observation.

Goodale's office issued a statement to say the RCMP's Integrated National Security Enforcement Team was working closely with Edmonton police. The police got the flag of the Islamic State from inside the van.

Just before midnight the same evening, a U-Haul truck was pulled over at a checkstop location on Wayne Gretzky Drive and 112 Ave. While the investigation continues, early reports indicate that this is another example of the hate that we must remain ever vigilant against. Knecht said the driver almost T-boned multiple cars and appeared to aim for pedestrians.

One local bar manager told The Globe and Mail that he had seen the U-Haul come careening down an alleyway next to his establishment, striking two patrons. "As the investigation unfolds and further information is garnered, and if additional charges are supported, they will be pursued at that time".

Members of Edmonton's Muslim community were dismayed at the attacks.
