Rebels storm Indian paramilitary camp in Kashmir; 3 killed

"An assistant sub-inspector of BSF also died in the initial assault", said the police authority.

Kashmiri resistance groups in Jammu-Kashmir have been fighting against Indian rule for independence or for unification with neighboring Pakistan.

Tuesday's attack came a day after Indian soldiers killed five suspected militants near the heavily militarised Line of Control (LoC) that divides the territory with Pakistan.

Inspector General of Police, Kashmir Range, Munir Khan said they continued to look for six to seven terrorists and that they needed to "neutralise them very fast".

"Three personnel have been injured".

"Normal flight operations have resumed and passengers were boarding flights", said Sharad Kumar, director of the airport's operator.

System failure triggers delays at Sydney airport
Air traffic control's systems went down at 5.20am, grounding thousands of passengers at the start of school holidays. A power outage at Sydney Airport air traffic control has delayed or diverted 34 domestic flights this morning .

Srinagar airport is the only civilian airport in the region, besides this, the technical airport used by armed forces and VIPs is also in the vicinity.

Besides the AK 47 rifles and pistols, some grenades were also recovered from the possession of the militants, said officials.

The camp houses a battalion of Indian BSF and only barbed wire separates it from the Srinagar airport - controlled and run by the Indian Air Force.

While the three soldiers are out of danger, police declared the death of the BSF officer at 11am.

The attack took place at 4.00 am and the exchange of fire is still on between the militants and security forces, they said. Jaish-e-Muhammad has claimed responsibility for the attack, reports said.

Khan, who heads the police force in the Kashmir Valley, denied that there had been a security breach that led to the attack. They added the militants were lying low and stayed in south Kashmir for over a month before executing the attack. Srinagar International Airport is a highly fortified zone, and 182 Battalion is entrusted with the security of the airport's runway.
