Amazon Debuts (Parent-Controlled) Shopping Accounts for Teens

Today, Amazon unveiled their all-new "teen accounts" feature, allowing kids aged 13-17 to browse, purchase and stream Amazon products and content using their own private account.

The online retail giant said Wednesday that teens can now shop on Amazon on their own, if their parents let them.

If the approval process gets tedious, parents can also set pre-approved spending limits. "We've listened to families and have built a great experience for both teens and parents", Michael Carr, vice president, Amazon Households said in a statement.

For parents, an email or text message is sent when the order is "placed" - that is, when the teen is ready to order, but the item isn't actually purchased yet. Once received, the parent confirms which payment method and shipping address will be used for teens' orders. This means that a parent with a Prime account can share the benefits that come with it with their children. Amazon's default setting with this service is autoapproval of orders, but parents can individually approve them via text if they so prefer.

Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) is now allowing teens to make their own accounts on its website.

Teens using the service will also be able to include a personal note when making a purchase (for example: "This is a book I need for class").

For Amazon, getting teens to shop now could turn them into customers for the rest of their lives, said Brendan Witcher, an e-commerce industry analyst at Forrester. "Parents receive itemized notifications for every order and can cancel and return any item in accordance with Amazon's policies".

Teens with an Amazon account are about to acquire some buying power.
