IAF Jets Destroy Syrian Missile Battery

No people were in injured, and the Israeli jets returned safely, but not before attacking an anti-aircraft battery east of the Syrian capital of Damascus.

This was the first such incident of Syrian forces targeting Israeli planes since the Syrian civil war began in 2011.

Israeli warplanes struck a Syrian anti-aircraft battery after coming under fire during a reconnaissance mission in Lebanese airspace, the Israeli military said Monday.

The fighter jets responded by launching four bombs towards the battery, destroying it, the Israeli army said. Israel values its relations with Russia as frank dialogue helps resolve all issues, Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman said at a meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergey Shoigu.

The IAF destroyed a Syrian SA-5 battery after it fired at IAF aircraft in Lebanon.

There was no immediate response from the Syrian government. Unless the Syrians decide on similar attacks in the future, which will force Israel to respond again.

Both Israeli and Russian jets have flown missions over Syria in recent years and the two militaries communicate on a daily basis, and an Israeli military spokesman said the Israelis informed the Russians about the anti-aircraft attack "in real time".

Analysts ascribed the former to Syrian dictator Bashar Assad's battlefield successes, which may have prompted him to take a more aggressive approach toward Israel.

The Command warned of the "dangerous repercussions" of Israel's repeated aggression attempts, stressing Syria's determination to continue its war against the terrorist groups, Israel's arm in the region.

Israel has largely stayed out of the fighting in Syria, but has occasionally carried out strikes on Syrian military positions.

Conricus acknowledged the sensitivity of the timing of the incident and the potential for it to cause tension during Shoigu's visit, but said the military was "confident it won't influence anything else".
