Trump Inaccurately Claims Obama Didn't Call Families Of Troops KIA

"Stop the damn lying - you're the president", former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder tweeted alongside a photo of himself and Obama with a trio of soldiers.

Obama hosted a breakfast for "Gold Star" families - those who had lost a family member who was in uniform - on May 30, 2011, according to the White House public schedule for that day.

President Obama's official photographer, Pete Souza, said he photographed the Democrat leader's "meeting with hundreds of wounded soldiers, and family members of those killed in action".

"The traditional way, if you look at President Obama and other presidents, majority didn't make calls, a lot of them didn't make calls", Trump said when asked about the four Green Berets killed earlier this month in Niger.

Another former Obama administration official also said Trump's claim is wrong.

Several former aides of Obama called Trump a "liar" as soon as he made the comment.

.

Not only did Obama call to pay his respects to the fallen when he was president, but he did it in person on numberous occasions.

Gen Kelly's son, Robert, 29, was a first lieutenant in the Marines when he stepped on a landmine and died in 2010.

Retired General Martin E. Dempsey, the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, confirmed these contacts, tweeting: "POTUS 43 & 44 and first ladies cared deeply, worked tirelessly for the serving, the fallen, and their families".

"I don't know if he did", the president said.

Trump made his remark when asked about how he would respond to an ambush attack from ISIS related militants in Niger earlier this month that left four USA servicemembers dead.

President Trump on Tuesday defended his false charge that ex-President Obama didn't call Gold Star families - saying that reporters should ask his chief of staff if Obama had called him after his son was killed in Afghanistan.

"Now, as far as other representatives, I don't know", he continued.

Trump claimed that he penned letters to the families of the soldiers over the weekend, and they would be sent later that day or the next day.

A spokesman for Obama declined to comment.

But Trump would not let it lie, claiming again with zero evidence that other presidents did not call.

Trump said Tuesday that he "will be calling, have called, and will be calling the parents and loved ones, wives of the soldiers that recently were killed" but that he wanted to wait for the right time. All you have to do is ask the military people, but I believe his policy was somewhat different than my policy.

George W. Bush also wrote letters to families of troops killed in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, which began during his tenure. "I'm going to be calling them, I want a little time to pass".
