Volvo's Polestar performance division is releasing its first vehicle, the Polestar 1

Jonathan Goodman, Polestar chief operating officer says this new model of vehicle "ownership" as a disruptor fits in with the now standalone brand's vision of changing the motoring landscape.

Under the bonnet is Volvo's 2.0 litre petrol engine with turbo and supercharging for 377bhp to the front wheels, and a pair of electric motors on the back wheels chucking in another 215bhp.

Its range of 150km on electric power alone gives it the longest-running electric range of any hybrid auto on the market, according to Volvo. These days of course we're more familiar with it offering upgrades for cars like the V40, but with over 40 per cent of global vehicle sales expected to be electric within the next two decades, and upstarts like Tesla getting a jump on more established premium manufacturers, Polestar has been retasked with guiding Volvo in a new direction. The subscription is "all-inclusive" with a single monthly payment that includes valet service for maintenance visits as well as the ability to rent alternative vehicles from within the Volvo and Polestar range as your circumstances dictate.

Polestar will also have its own new purpose-built production facility in China. This would be followed by Polestar 3, an all-electric SUV-style vehicle.

Despite the Polestar 1 not arriving until 2019, Polestar are taking orders from today.

Under the hood it features a plug-in hybrid drivetrain using lithium-ion batteries to power twin electric motors on the rear axle. Volvo says about half of SPA is unique to the new auto, including the new Öhlins Continuously Controlled Electronic Suspension (CESi).

Recently, Volvo India rolled out the first locally assembled XC90! Unlike its Volvo siblings, however, the Polestar 1 uses carbon fiber for "a majority" of its body panels. The lease terms are two or three years, after which the Polestars will be leased again as certified pre-owned used cars.

Southgate: England fans may hold Euro '96 against me
It is no easy thing getting to a World Cup , there are some big countries around the world that are struggling. If that doesn't occur then the trip to Lithuania will certainly be a lot more stressful than necessary.

Further on down the line, the Polestar 3 will be a fully-electric SUV that's likely to go head-to-head with the Tesla Model X.

The company has already pledged that, from 2019, all of its new cars will be hybrid or electric.

This means, despite its declaration it was making a break from Volvo, Polestar's first auto will draw heavy styling influences from both the S90 and V90.

Unsurprisingly, the Polestar 3 is an SUV-style BEV that's now in the "finishing stages of design".

Polestar has also approached a third party supplier for the brakes, too, with Akebono developing a set of a six-piston calipers and 400mm discs for the Polestar 1.

All future cars from Polestar will have a fully electric powertrain.
