Google Maps drops its experimental cupcake calorie feature

It told people how many calories they would burn if they walked and what that was in terms of cupcakes.

We are more than certain this move was implemented with the hopes of encouraging Google Maps users to get motivated to walk more instead of driving, all in the quest for a healthier lifestyle. Citymapper, for example, has a calorie estimate feature.

The feature was designed around encouraging users to be more active by displaying how many calories could be burned by walking to a chosen destination.

Google introduced a new feature to Google Maps on iPhone this week, only to remove it within 24 hours following user complaints.

The feature on the Google Maps for iOS measured calories in the form of desserts like one mini cupcake that equals 110 calories.

The vote was strongly opposed by the central government in Baghdad, Iran, Turkey and other countries including the United States. They have agreed to increase economic cooperation as well as joining forces to address major issues in the Islamic world.

Yet despite the "strong user feedback" to scrap the feature, many on social media were also feeling a little disappointed from the decision. "The average person burns 90 Calories by walking 1 mile".

USA tech journalist Taylor Lorenz led the way, prompting a fierce online debate about the update after claiming it was triggering for people who struggled with their weight or eating disorders. However, the problem is that nobody has said what an average person should look like.

Perhaps Google will try testing this feature again in the future, but not until the dust settles from the failure of the first test.

Others are shaming people who eat cupcakes is not cool and this may trigger those who actually have eating disorders.

The feature was rolled out on a test basis to some iOS users, but was rapidly panned on Twitter. "That's exactly the sort of snack a gaggle of Soylent-chugging gym nerds eternally cloistered in the amniotic sac of a Google conference room would assume we on the outside are shoveling into our maws, taking breaks only to unlock our vehicle doors or use our sticky fingers to order more mini cupcakes".
