Google makes searches 'more local and relevant' in new update

At the bottom of the search page you can also see the country service now being used.

Google has announced that the way it displays search results to users is changing.

"In order to provide this optimal experience, your location determines the country service you receive results for across Google Search and Maps".

For instance, if you are in the USA, it will show you search results from the US.

Services like Gmail and YouTube have already worked like this, Google notes, adding that the change is now live for both desktop and mobile searches, along with Google Maps and Google's iOS app.

Overall, the motive of Google here is providing the best services to it's users.

Google will automatically detect if you go to another country and serve you results for your new location. Previously, the results you received for an global search were based on the country code selected. The major drawback of this update can be like if a person is traveling from the United States to Japan and he wants to search restaurant near his hotel in Japan which he has booked, then he will get results for the U.S. itself.

"Google wants to stop the practice of manually entering the top-level domain to get a country's services", according to a report in 9to5google. That's no longer the case, as the company says users will now get results based on their current location regardless of the domain they search from. Your choice will appear at the bottom of the page.

You've always been able to get localized search results by visiting Google at different domains - like google.com for the U.S., google.co.uk for England, or google.co.jp for Japan - but that won't be the case any more after today. This can be done from the settings menu of Google.com where you can go to search settings and pick a new location.
