Daylight Saving Time Ends Sunday, But The Debates It Inspires Appear Endless

As we turn the clocks back an hour Sunday morning at 2 a.m., there seems to be two schools of thought on the annual fall rite: One camp likes the extra hour of sleep, while those in the other bemoans the earlier hour of darkness.

So, where does Daylight Saving Time originate from? One from 2011 that followed people in IN, (which didn't uniformly observed daylight saving time before 2006) found that energy usage actually increased with daylight saving time. That extra hour sounds good, but new research shows it could come with a spike in crime.

Credit - or blame - for the biannual shift goes back to Benjamin Franklin, who published An Economical Project for Diminishing the Cost of Light in a 1784 journal after he noticed that people burned candles at night but slept past dawn.

The United States followed shortly after on March 31, 1918 during World War I. It was used as a wartime measure for the United States.

1945-1966 - There is no federal law regarding Daylight Saving Time.

What's more, there is evidence to suggest daylight saving time takes a toll on TV ratings.

Under the act, states and territories can opt out of daylight saving.

In 1986, federal legislation mandated DST begin the first Sunday in April and end the last Sunday in October.

2007 - Under the new laws, all of IN now observes Daylight Saving Time, where only certain areas of the state did before.

Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and most of Arizona don't observe daylight saving time, so there's no need to change the clocks in those places.

Daylight saving is observed in approximately 70 countries, including most of those in North America and Europe.
