Trump administration to end TPS for Nicaraguans. No decision on Haitians, Salvadorans

The United States has ended the Temporary Protected Status, or TPS, program for Nicaraguan migrants living in the country, EFE reported.

The irresponsible decision to end the TPS for Nicaraguans will tear families apart and disrupt the lives of these working individuals, the president of the Congress Hispanic Legislative Group, Michelle Lujan said on the measure announced yesterday.

The department said that acting Secretary Elaine Duke had not yet made a decision about Honduras, requiring additional information on the conditions on the ground and saying Honduras had formally requested an extension. A decision on Haiti and El Salvador is due later this month.

Hondurans and Nicaraguans were given the protected status in response to Hurricane Mitch in 1998.

A bill proposed last week by Miami Republican Rep. Carlos Curbelo and co-sponsored by other members of South Florida's congressional delegation would grant TPS recipients from Honduras, Haiti, El Salvador and Nicaragua a path to permanent residency.

Critics have complained the TPS program allows participants to repeatedly extend their stays in 6-month to 18-month increments in case of a natural disaster, civil strife or other emergencies in their homelands.

The decision affects about 2,500 Nicaraguans, many of whom have lived in the USA for almost two decades, raising US-born children.

TPS for Nicaraguans will terminate on January 5, 2019.

According to his sister, Alicia Waskoski said, "great friend, a great family member and a really great father". Another aunt, Nancy Vizcarra said he was kind and protective of his younger brother and the family as a whole.

Rather than ending TPS, the advocates from an array of agencies said, it was time for Congress to develop a legislative plan to allow Nicaraguans, Hondurans and others to remain in the US permanently in the name of family unity and because they play vital roles in building American society.

That Jan. 5 deadline means that after then, those Nicaraguans must be out of the country or they will be here illegally. If they don't comply, they will be considered undocumented migrants and could face deportation.

"We do hope and encourage Congress to look at this and find a solution", the official added.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is nearing a decision on the plans for TPS recipients.

"While it is clear that TPS protection was meant to provide refuge for people of color in Honduras, Nicaragua and Haiti, their homelands have yet to reach a place of safety or economic prosperity which would make their return feasible", Eddie Carmona, director of PICO National Network's LA RED immigrant justice campaign, said in a statement.

But Duke will soon be out of her role, pending the confirmation of Trump's nominee for secretary, his current Deputy Chief of Staff Kirstjen Nielsen. "These are people who are working, who are paying their taxes, and we hope that when the time comes when they follow this process in the USA, that we will have the opportunity to have a renewal of the Temporary Protection Status or some way to have our countrymen continue to live in this country".

The executive must make a decision 60 days before the expiration deadline for each program.

Duke has until November 23 to decide whether some 195,000 El Salvadorians and 58,000 Haitians will retain their protected status.
